At the outset, one would feel that this tool is just a game that will help company employees and individuals to increase their knowledge and develop a “take charge” attitude. The major benefit of this tool is that it creates ownership for the ideas generated and increases the probability of achieving it. This game will also help people get a better understanding of the performance of self, team, department, and company. Once people use the doHow® tool, they are aware that it has 2 parts: the game and the practice sessions. As mentioned earlier, the game helps team get ideas/insights, questions, and actions. While the practice sessions will help the team gain more function specific knowledge. These practice sessions will also help employees to adjust to change of roles.
With the benefits mentioned above and some more, one would wonder will this tool help solve my problem? To answer this question, one has to understand what problem solving means and how would a tool help you arrive at a solution that can be implemented? Let us first understand what problem solving is and how would a tool help in arriving a solution.
To solve a problem, few steps are followed unconsciously by everybody and sometimes not in the same order but suitable to the situation at hand. The steps are as follows:
- Acknowledging that something is not right
- Identifying what is not right (Problem)
- Identifying stakeholders associated
- Understanding their requirements and effects of the associated problem
- Analyze cause and effects
- Find the root cause
- List out multiple solutions (brainstorming, experts opinions, SWOT, flowcharts, etc)
- Evaluate all and choose best solution
- Implement solution (Pilot mode or full mode depending on situations)
- Recheck if the problem has been completely eliminated
Many tools called as Problem solving tools are available. However all tools just provide the same or similar steps mentioned above in a structured framework or guidelines to arrive at the solution but does not provide the solution as such. The major benefit of these tools is that it will guide you through the implementation. However, some major limitations of these tools are:
- It can handle only one problem at a time
- It is a time consuming process
- Normally the team that is involved in problem solving will be the department which has the problem and not a random company employee
Now coming to doHow® tool, which is very versatile and easy to use, one can use to find solutions for numerous problems at the same time. The beauty of this tool is that it is unstructured and gives flexibility for everyone to contribute without bias to the problems one is unbeknownst. This tool, which is played as a game, can be used to play only as a game or to find a solution. In this game, random people from the company are formed into groups and are posed a general question. This question is more of a task where one of them explains or performs in their group about their experience or their opinions or their understanding related to the topic in question. At this stage, everyone will get many ideas and solutions to their problems.
The benefit of this tool is that one can get new out of the box ideas and solutions without their own knowledge. Moreover, as these ideas are their personal, the probability of these ideas getting implemented is very high. The best part of this tool is that it can generate ideas/solutions at a time for multiple problems. It will help employees understand about the other roles in company and what challenges others are facing and spread unity in the company. This tool teaches knowledge to people.
The only drawback is that it is not a structured approach and if people are not interested to address their problems, then they will not benefit and another limitation is that it does not have any structure to ensure implementation of ideas, the reason being all implementations has to be self-driven to success and not by force. It assumes that people are self-driven. Just like any other problem solving tool if one does not know what his/her problem is then he/she gets no benefit from any tool.
