I will start with some definitions. Entrepreneur-Employer is a person who employs people to work for his or her company. Employed-Employer is a manager in a company who hires people to work in his or her team. Employed-Employee is a person who works from an Employer, be it an Entrepreneur or Employed. Contract-Employee is a person who is deputed to a company. The following slide depicts this hierarchy in a very simple manner. Additionally, the relevant competencies are also depicted.
Starting with domain competencies at the bottom of the pyramid, through people and leadership competencies, conceptual competencies are necessary for the top of the pyramid – in all cases, always all the knowledge, hard and soft skills as well as abilities necessary to execute a role in an organisation.
Let me now present a competency map that you probably are very much aware of.
People over-defining the target levels combined with an extremely subjective evaluation of the actual individual competencies is really a huge challenge, from my experience. While the competence mapping is common to the industry for more than a decade now, I keep meeting industry professionals who haven’t got much benefit from the competency mapping. In my analysis, it is due to a simplistic treatment of the highly complex functional role in any company.
What way is it different in the following doHow® LEARN Maturity Model for Competence Enhancement?
This model is prepared only for every individual contributor in an organisation. A model for the various levels of managers refers to the respective individual models.
- Learning covers the conventional knowhow mapped in any competence model.
- Execution covers the routines necessary for efficient and effective role fulfilment.
- Attribute covers the Key Success Factors along with hints for the maturity levels.
- Results cover the Key Performance Indicators for validating the performance.
- Network covers the sharing being done to enhance organisational learning.
The following doHow® LEARN Maturity Model for Competence Enhancement is for a Shop Floor Supervisor in a Machining Shop.
This is then transferred to the doHow® Mobile APP for Mass Deployment and regular Self, One-on-one and Group Consultancoaching. You may want to download the doHow APP from the Google Play store and check out the “Enhancing Shop Floor FLM Competence” under Training Practices and then under Manufacturing. The following figure shows some screenshots.
I have discovered an important relationship. Higher the competence higher is the discipline. Instead of complaining of the lack of discipline, use our doHow® to thoroughly enhance the competence.
Happy reading and wishing you all the best for the review of your competence mapping!!!
